Give life.

I worked in the part of the hospital that distributes blood to patients Monday through Wednesday this week and was astounded by the shortage of blood & especially platelets available for transfusion patients.

Platelets are crucial in helping blood to clot. They are administered to people that have certain types of cancer (especially leukemia) and other illnesses that prevent sufficient platelet production in bone marrow. Generation of platelets can be impeded either by the disease itself or necessary treatments.

Platelets are also often given after surgery to replenish platelets lost in the procedure.
Apparently it’s fairly common for blood banks to have to ration blood to hospitals over the summer. I’ve decided to make an effort to donate every time I’m eligible. If you’re able, I urge you to do the same; it just might save someone’s life.
