Steamboat Springs Colorado
February 10th - 17th
We just came back from an awesome skiing trip in Steamboat Springs. I love this town, and Colorado in general. The weather on Sunday wasn't great for skiing (rain), so we just relaxed and hung out. Anthony, Lamar, & I had our first ski day on Monday. Anthony took a lesson in the morning, then we all met up for lunch at the base of the Gondola. After lunch, Anthony decided not to return to his lesson, so Lamar taught him how to turn. We skied on the lower mountain for the rest of the day & had a great time.
Monday was mom's birthday, so we went on a horse-drawn sleigh ride followed by an awesome steak dinner. This is an old Allen family tradition & we all enjoyed it immensely.
On Tuesday, the whole crew set out for Sunshine Peak. It was a beautiful day; the weather literally couldn't have been more perfect. All of the skiing pictures were taken on Tuesday.
Anthony and I planned to take the day off on Wednesday to check out Fish Creek Falls & walk around the shops in town. The falls were frozen, but you could hear water running beneath the ice. Unfortunately, the frozen waterfall was coated in snow & it was difficult to really see the falls.
Between Wednesday & Thursday, we got about 10" of fresh powder at the top of the Sunshine & Storm Peaks. Anthony & I skied with Lamar all day & traveled all over the mountain. It was cold & the visibility was poor, but this was probably the best day for skiing (in terms of snow) that I can remember for the past couple of years.
On Friday morning, one of the neighbors told us that all of the upper mountain lifts due to extremely windy conditions were closed & that the lift lines on the lower mountain were about an hour long, so we decided not to ski. There's a weather station at the top of Mount Werner & at one point, wind speeds reached 107MPH! Anthony spent most of the day catching up on work while mom & I walked around town (Debbie & Lamar caught a flight out of Hayden on Friday afternoon).
All in all, it was a fun trip. It was very difficult at times, as Steamboat was dad's favorite place & we miss him dearly.
