During our trip to Gatlinburg, Anthony and I took a trip to Reliance, TN, for a kayaking adventure on the scenic Hiwassee River. The water temperature averages 54 degrees, which felt cold, but refreshing on an 80+ degree afternoon. Navigating through the rapids and playing in the water was definitely one of the coolest experiences we've had in our almost six years of marriage. : )
We rented kayaks from Hiwassee Outfitters, which we were initially skeptical about due to a very negative (and hilarious) review posted on Google. Our experience was very positive - the cost of renting a kayak for 2-4 hours, catching a shuttle to the start point, paddles, and life vests (which we didn't utilize because we have our own) was a reasonable $30. The outfitter also allowed customers to bring their dogs on kayaking and rafting trips, & we saw several families taking advantage of this opportunity. This, of course, made me really wish we had a K9 friend of our own to enjoy outdoor adventures with. Maybe some day!
All of these photos / videos were taken with my iPhone 3G using an Aquapac waterproof case. Unfortunately, the videos that I shot while paddling and going over rapids were very jerky and difficult to watch.
